After years of collaborative, community effort, there is finally an equivalent to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) for ferns and lycophytes: The Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group (PPG 1) has been published in the Journal of Systematics and Evolution. This paper, which presents a classification system for extant ferns and lycophytes, involved the efforts of hundreds of people and was coordinated by Eric Schuettpelz and Harald Schneider. Our lab was involved as Emily was the family coordinator for Dryopteridaceae. The PPG has already been a giant step forward, as it has brought together our global community of pteridophyte researchers to put it together, and it will serve as a strong foundation for decades of fern and lycophyte research to come.
